What are vaccinations?

are vaccines necessary for dogs/kittens?

The purpose of puppy/kitten vaccines and annual vaccines is to mildly stimulate the immune system by having it recognize the antigens present. This way, if a dog or cat becomes exposed to the real disease, their immune system will recognize it and therefore be prepared to fight it off, or at the least reduce its effects.

The following are core vaccinations:

(Dogs)

• Canine Parvovirus
• Canine Distemper
• Leptospirosis
• Hepatitis
• Rabies

(Cats)

• Feline Panleukopaenia Virus
• Feline Calicivirus
• Feline Rhinotracheitis (also known as feline herpesvirus)
• Rabies

We typically recommend the following vaccination schedule for puppies:

• 8 weeks of age – First Vaccine (Dhppi-L)
• 11 – 12 weeks of age – Second Vaccine (Dhppi-L + Rabies)
• 16 weeks (optional) – Third Vaccine (Dhppi-L)

We typically recommend the following vaccination schedule for kittens:

• 8 weeks of age – First Vaccine (Panleukkopaenia, calicivirus, rhinotracheitis) Also known as Tricat
• 11-12 weeks of age – Second Vaccine (Panleukkopaenia, calicivirus, rhinotracheitis + Rabies)

Once the core vaccinations are complete, we repeat vaccinations annually.
